Mira Costa History
The Mira Costa neighborhood was initially agricultural land owned by Francis Miyosaku Uyematsu in the early 1900s who founded Southern California’s famous Star Nurseries and imported and grew camellia and cherry trees, but who was tragically forced to sell the land due to the prejudice of the WW2 period. The land was then developed as housing for the many oil workers who were flocking to the region in search of work. The streets were laid out in a grid pattern, and many of the homes were small, single-story bungalows that were popular with working-class families. Over the years, the neighborhood has evolved and grown, and today it is home to a diverse population of people from all walks of life.
